Hebrews 9:27

Hebrews 9:27

Death then judgement

An awful lot of time and resources are spent today in trying to help us avoid or postpone death! Without wishing to sound ungrateful none of us can really avoid our destiny, for all must die, rich and poor, the great and the good, paupers and kings, famous and unknown. As the daily news reminds us, even the most accomplished and wealthy of earth’s citizens eventually die, that is our destiny and it is impossible to cheat it. Strangely, very few spend any length of time thinking about what happens next, and many who do make up their own versions of life after death or follow religions that promise much but that are unable to deliver.

The Bible is clear that we cannot avoid this terminal appointment, our graveyards are full of those who have passed before us and in truth, our time on earth is very short. The old phrase, “Eat, drink and be merry”, has not altered over the centuries and it is understandable that many adopt this attitude to life. Is that the end of it all? Not according to the Creator who made us. He predicts and warns that there is another stage in our journey, that after death comes judgement. Judgement that carefully assesses our time on God’s earth and how we spent it. Judgement that decides what our future destiny will be. It is not in our hands, when we die the subsequent episode in our existence is in God’s hands and He will decide, based on careful consideration, what happens next. Of course, only the Creator has this right and this power. I’m afraid that if we try to make our own assessments, we will fall far short, only God can do it because He is the One who has kept the most careful and detailed records of every single life and how it has been lived. As we shall see, our destiny is not so much about what we have achieved but our faith in what He has done for us and our attitude to Him whilst living on earth. The next verse will tell us more!
