Psalm 145:9

The Lord is good

We need to be reminded at times, of the extent of God’s goodness. It’s easy to stick our chests out and walk proudly in the knowledge that God is good to us, His children, those that believe in Him and have accepted salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. But God is good to everyone. He created a beautiful world for us all to inhabit, He provides food and drink to every one of the 8.142 billion people who live on this planet (as at 2024). God’s goodness is reflected on the land, in the seas, throughout the heavens and in the very air that we breathe. Our miraculous bodies are all the evidence we need that God is good and the beauty and wonder of all creation is given to us to enjoy and to carefully manage. Oh yes, God is good to all.

He is not only good, but He has a benevolent compassion towards all human beings. Are they not made in His image? Are we not at the peak of the food chain, given brains and physical abilities to watch over the complex world that has been assigned to us? Is not the sacrifice of His only Son all the evidence we need that God has compassion on all He has made? We humans are particularly blessed and favoured but even creation will one day be liberated from its groaning when the curse of sin is removed. What a future awaits us, what a glorious world we will inhabit. That is why it makes no sense whatsoever that so many people ignore their Creator and curse His name, it’s illogical, and it really is the highest form of ingratitude and rudeness. Let’s rejoice that this God loves to reveal His goodness and to show compassion to all creatures, and that includes you and me. Hallelujah!

Psalm 119:87

  Psalm 119:87 Almost but not quite If only we knew the circumstances that form the back story to this Psalm! What happened to the psalm-writer to make him feel so vulnerable? Who exactly were these antagonists and persecutors and how did they “almost wipe our friend from the earth”? We’ve already speculated that he must have been a priest or maybe a member of the royal family for his suffering seems to have wide-ranging and public consequences. It seems that there had been a murderous plot on his life and now the author admits that whilst he nearly died, he still clings tenaciously to the precepts of the Lord his God. Psalm 119:11

Psalm 119:11 I have hidden Your word in my heart Well, whole books could be written about these few powerful words. Let’s repeat them, “ I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”  I first learned this text, in Sunday School, over 60 years ago. Thank goodness I did! How many of us have learned Scriptural truths and hidden them in our hearts and then found, maybe years down the line, that they come popping up at just the right moment?
