Psalm 145:16

He provides for every living thing

It’s understandable that unbelievers and doubters walk around with their eyes shut and fail to see God’s provision. It is less understandable when believers and followers of Christ don’t notice or care! Firstly, we are blind if we do not see the stamp of God on His beautiful and amazing creative works, every organism and living plant or animal reveals the eternal power and divine nature of God. How can we fail to take notice?

But, as we saw in verse 15, it’s not just the created works themselves, it’s also the organisation of these things and the complexity of the management structures that hold them together, that should also leave us wide-eyed with wonder and admiration. As the verse before us says, “You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.” That includes the spiders behind the wardrobe, the rats in the ditch, the rabbits on the edge of the fields, the Buzzards and Red Kites that “mew” overhead and the crabs on the seashore. Every living thing is provided for. Creation is not just about human beings, in fact we are the worst abusers, we take what is not ours and hoard it, we are by nature gluttonous and greedy and are rarely satisfied. Never-the-less, we are above other creatures, we were made to respond to the beneficial provision of our Maker and to acknowledge His care and protection. 

Please take time today to look around and marvel at the stamp of God’s hand and His character on the world we all live in. Let’s praise Him for His good works, for the food He provides and the for the remarkable co-ordinated schemes He devised so that everything works together. Wow! What a mind He must possess. Wow! He not only creates these complex and extravagant systems, but He produces them so they operate as objects of beauty too! Praise be to our God!

Psalm 119:87

  Psalm 119:87 Almost but not quite If only we knew the circumstances that form the back story to this Psalm! What happened to the psalm-writer to make him feel so vulnerable? Who exactly were these antagonists and persecutors and how did they “almost wipe our friend from the earth”? We’ve already speculated that he must have been a priest or maybe a member of the royal family for his suffering seems to have wide-ranging and public consequences. It seems that there had been a murderous plot on his life and now the author admits that whilst he nearly died, he still clings tenaciously to the precepts of the Lord his God. Psalm 119:11

Psalm 119:11 I have hidden Your word in my heart Well, whole books could be written about these few powerful words. Let’s repeat them, “ I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”  I first learned this text, in Sunday School, over 60 years ago. Thank goodness I did!
