Psalm 145:14

Psalm 145:14

The Lord upholds and lifts up

This verse reminds us of the prayer of Hannah, Samuel’s mother, before she hands over her young son to the service of the Lord at the Temple. These are some of the words she prayed to the Lord, “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; He seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of Honour.” (1 Samuel 2:8) Sometimes we need to be reminded that the values and order of things in the world is exactly opposite to those held by the Lord. Who knows what circumstances may cause us to fall? Who knows what might happen in life to bring us to be bowed down? Maybe  financial hardship, or maybe the way we are treated by others? Maybe  shame and self-imposed humiliation? Some are bowed down by the weight of their responsibilities, others by the cares and worries of life, the list is a long one. David reveals his own troubles in Psalm 38 where it is impossible to determine if he was “bowed down” by illness or by a sin he had committed. He writes in Psalm 38:6 , “I am bowed down and brought very low, all day long I go about mourning.” In that particular Psalm he associates falling with death!

The point that David makes is, that whatever the cause of our troubles and whatever situation we find ourselves in, the Lord is able to hold us, to keep us from falling completely and He is able to lift our face upwards and to restore us. We should never give up hope, we should never lose faith in Our God, we should never think that a situation is beyond Him for when He intervenes, things can change very quickly. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. Let’s entrust ourselves to Him completely. Hallelujah!
