Hebrews 9:12

Eternal redemption by His blood!!

Let’s begin our meditations on this verse with some enlightening words from Leviticus 17: 1, “For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.” This is not just a scientific discovery or a biological fact; the Lord God has decreed that His creative acts allowed for His creatures to live and breathe because they have pumping hearts and because there is a pulsating fluid that is circulated around their bodies. Without this we would all die! Blood not only helps us to breathe and act but it also nourishes the cells in our bodies with all the nutrients that we need for life. Thus, the ancient sacrificial system was a form of substitution, in order that one creature might live, another had to sacrifice its blood. This substitutionary system was instituted by God to pave the way for Yeshua who became the ultimate sacrifice when He gave His blood for the whole of mankind. That is why His perfection must never be questioned; the ultimate lamb of sacrifice must be spotless and untainted by sin or else it would not be good enough for the ultimate sacrifice. 

It is only after we grasp the significance of centuries of blood offerings that the offering of God’s Lamb as a substitute for all humanity makes sense! Our Lord took the role of the final High Priest upon Himself and He entered the Most Holy Place, in heaven. He took with Him His own blood. This final act of redemption does not need to be repeated; it is once for all and covers the sins of everyone who receives the offering by faith. It is not just faith in the existence of Jesus Christ and His being the Son of God that counts, what we are called to put our faith in is the sacrifice He made that covers our sins and washes us clean. As verse 9 reminded us, it is the only way that we can worship the Lord God with a clear conscience. We don’t just have faith in Christ as a divine Being; we have faith in what He came to do for us and the fact that His blood makes it possible for us to enter the presence of the living God. If that is not so, then our faith is in vain and we might as well convert to some other religious system! But it is true, we have eternal redemption, something that no other form of religion could ever provide. Hallelujah!

Psalm 119:83 Wineskins in the smoke Well, this verse has caught us by surprise! What does it mean? As we will be aware, in ancient times, wine was not stored in purpose-made glass bottles but in animal skins. In order to keep the skin pliable and soft it must not be allowed to dry out for it would soon shrivel and crack. It follows that the last thing you would do with your treasured wineskins is to hang them up over a smoky fire, not only would they quickly wither but the smoke would clearly ruin the flavour and texture of the wine!  What does the author mean when he says that he is like such a wineskin?  It denotes the uncomfortable condition he was in or at least thought himself to be in; being caught in the midst of smoke is very uncomfortable, and he considered himself to be in darkness with sin and afflictions, like a wineskin in smoke, black and sooty. Psalm 106:13 Do not forget We need to remember that Israel’s relationship with the Lord God was based on His laws and their obedience. It was possible for them to live lives that were highly blessed, that incorporated the provision of God in every tiny detail of their national and individual existence. God was prepared to give them everything they needed, He would provide food and water for them and their flocks. He would guide them on their journey. He would protect them from their enemies.
