Hebrews 8:11

They will all know Him!

There is a future fulfilment to these verses that we have been addressing. Remember that v8-12 of this chapter of Hebrews are a quotation from Jeremiah 31:31-34 and the old prophet’s pronouncements look into the future when the whole world will be under the rule and reign of Christ, and all men will learn to obey the commands of the Lord. The Israelites were ordered to teach the commandments of the Law to one another and to their children and many have done so, to this very day. In the same way my parents taught me a great deal from the Scriptures, not least what was right and wrong in God’s sight. Parents today would do well to follow this example, but it won’t always be necessary! Will we always need to proclaim the word of the Lord on street corners or in our workplaces or in Sunday Schools? No! There will come a day when men are no longer ignorant about God, for His Son will reign over the earth and His commands will be obvious to all. 

Psalm 2 is as succinct a summary of this coming age as anything we read in Scripture. This is part of it; “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain. “I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.”                  Psalm 2:7-11.

Notice that this universal awareness of who Christ is will extend from the youngest to the oldest, from the least to the greatest. No man or woman will take precedence in this future kingdom, mankind will no longer kow-tow to the great and the good or the rich and the powerful, all men will have equal status, and all will bow down to the King of kings. And every being still alive on this planet will know the Lord and everyone will pay homage to Him and His Word will prevail. “Come Lord Jesus.” Hallelujah!

Psalm 119:83

Psalm 119:83 Wineskins in the smoke Well, this verse has caught us by surprise! What does it mean? As we will be aware, in ancient times, wine was not stored in purpose-made glass bottles but in animal skins. In order to keep the skin pliable and soft it must not be allowed to dry out for it would soon shrivel and crack. It follows that the last thing you would do with your treasured wineskins is to hang them up over a smoky fire, not only would they quickly wither but the smoke would clearly ruin the flavour and texture of the wine!  What does the author mean when he says that he is like such a wineskin?  It denotes the uncomfortable condition he was in or at least thought himself to be in; being caught in the midst of smoke is very uncomfortable, and he considered himself to be in darkness with sin and afflictions, like a wineskin in smoke, black and sooty. Psalm 106:13

Psalm 106:13 Do not forget We need to remember that Israel’s relationship with the Lord God was based on His laws and their obedience. It was possible for them to live lives that were highly blessed, that incorporated the provision of God in every tiny detail of their national and individual existence. God was prepared to give them everything they needed, He would provide food and water for them and their flocks. He would guide them on their journey. He would protect them from their enemies.
