Hebrews 7:6

Heaven meets earth

This verse points out that there was an exchange happening on the day that Abraham met Melchizedek. Both men recognised something in the other that made them special and significant. What they each saw was the hand of God or the Spirit of God present in another being. Abraham acknowledged that he was in the company of a representative of the Lord, a Godly man who was both king and priest and who was greater than himself. The Levites had not yet been born, and the Law had not been given but Abraham knew that this was a special moment, that the one before him was sent by God and occupied a role that was superior and worthy of his obeisance. 

Melchizedek, on the other hand, saw that Abraham was a recipient of God’s covenant promises, that here was a man who was truly blessed and who would have a significant role in the future of the whole world. These two characters were giants of their time, both represented the Lord God and both were intent on fulfilling His Word in their lives. Presumably they conversed, as they ate and drank together, and whilst doing so, they recognised the purpose and plan that the Lord had for them both. One of them represented the Kingdom of heaven, if he was not Yeshua in His pre-incarnate form, then Melchizedek was a senior messenger sent from the heavenly ranks. Abraham, on the other hand, was most certainly a human being through and through, but he had demonstrated a very unusual degree of faith and obedience and devotion to the Lord his God. Enough to make him the founder and human father of all who believe! 

Heaven met earth that day, and the future of the human race would never be the same! No wonder the author of Hebrews devotes so much attention to what, at first sight, seems to be a relatively innocuous encounter. It’s a meeting that should put a smile on our faces and joy in our hearts. The King Priest meets the Man and everything changes, is this not what Jesus Christ has done for us? Are we guilty on under-valuing our encounters with Him?

Psalm1:5       Our earthly journey will allow us, at times, to stand with the redeemed in holy awe and worship exhilarated by the presence of our Father.  In the Psalmists’ day these “assemblies of the righteous” would have been joyful times of worship at God’s sanctuary where music played, choirs sang and the people joined in the excitement and corporate wonder of being together in God’s presence. Psalm 119:83

Psalm 119:83 Wineskins in the smoke Well, this verse has caught us by surprise! What does it mean? As we will be aware, in ancient times, wine was not stored in purpose-made glass bottles but in animal skins. In order to keep the skin pliable and soft it must not be allowed to dry out for it would soon shrivel and crack. It follows that the last thing you would do with your treasured wineskins is to hang them up over a smoky fire, not only would they quickly wither but the smoke would clearly ruin the flavour and texture of the wine!  What does the author mean when he says that he is like such a wineskin?  It denotes the uncomfortable condition he was in or at least thought himself to be in; being caught in the midst of smoke is very uncomfortable, and he considered himself to be in darkness with sin and afflictions, like a wineskin in smoke, black and sooty.
