Hebrews 7:22

Jesus guarantees a better covenant

We need to explore the ways in which Jesus is the guarantor of a better covenant. Firstly, it is because His appointment is eternal, as we saw from the previous verse. He is indestructible, for the only thing that could hinder His ascent to power was death, and He defeated death! Hallelujah! 

Then, His influence and authority are not confined to just the earth, He is King and Priest over all things, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11. There will be no more changing sides in the heavenly realms, the adversary has had his day, his rule extends only over the earth, once Yeshua was crowned, every knee must bow down to Him. 

As we know, demons fear the name of Jesus, the Satan is building up towards one, last final conflict when he will seek to draw all earthly powers together to take on the might of the heavenly King and demons are very much involved in this confrontation .(Revelation 16:12-16) But the enemy has no chance, he will be bound and silenced. This conflict of course, involves Israel and Jerusalem because these places and this people have always been the apples of God’s eye and thus the focus of the devil’s jealous schemes and his manipulation of their Middle Eastern neighbours. Israel as a people were also the recipients of the old covenant which, as we have seen, relied on men’s best efforts and the functions of an earthly priesthood. Any covenant that makes Jesus Christ its High Priest and that draws in not just Jews but also Gentiles who become part of a heavenly Temple, that has got to be superior to anything that has gone before. It will happen and Jesus has become the guarantor! Hallelujah!

Psalm1:5       Our earthly journey will allow us, at times, to stand with the redeemed in holy awe and worship exhilarated by the presence of our Father.  In the Psalmists’ day these “assemblies of the righteous” would have been joyful times of worship at God’s sanctuary where music played, choirs sang and the people joined in the excitement and corporate wonder of being together in God’s presence. Psalm 119:83 Wineskins in the smoke Well, this verse has caught us by surprise! What does it mean? As we will be aware, in ancient times, wine was not stored in purpose-made glass bottles but in animal skins. In order to keep the skin pliable and soft it must not be allowed to dry out for it would soon shrivel and crack. It follows that the last thing you would do with your treasured wineskins is to hang them up over a smoky fire, not only would they quickly wither but the smoke would clearly ruin the flavour and texture of the wine!  What does the author mean when he says that he is like such a wineskin?  It denotes the uncomfortable condition he was in or at least thought himself to be in; being caught in the midst of smoke is very uncomfortable, and he considered himself to be in darkness with sin and afflictions, like a wineskin in smoke, black and sooty.
