Hebrews 6:18

It is impossible for God to lie

We would have to admit, that the author of Hebrews is very persistent when he has a point to make! A lot of time was spent proving, beyond doubt in chapter 1, that Jesus Christ is superior to all the angelic hosts of heaven. In chapter 3 we looked at the arguments as to why Jesus is superior to Moses, and then there is a drawn-out explanation as to why we must be wary of unbelief. This latter argument goes on throughout chapter 4 of the epistle and then come the lengthy warnings about elementary teachings and the differences between the milk and meat of the Word of God. Now, it seems that we must be left in no doubt as to the unbreakable authenticity of God’s promises. The apostle Paul would have probably dealt with each issue in a few short, pithy words and then moved on, which is why I do not believe that he is the writer of this letter!

Let’s consider, one more time, the impossibility of the Lord God ever breaking His promises. Firstly, because God never lies, it is impossible for Him to do so, it is not in His character and nature, the very thing that makes Him God is that He is without sin! If He had lied when He made His promise to Abraham, how could we trust anything else that He says? As we shall see in the next verse, the big question is, “When is God going to fulfil this promise completely?” There are still unsolved questions, Israel has still not fully inherited all that was promised. But it’s not just a promise that He made, He confirmed it with an oath, He swore by His own name. If the promise does not stand up against the tests of human history, if God’s words fall short, then He will be proved to be false, unreliable and untrustworthy! It really is that critical!

The verse before us now embraces Israel, those who have fled. They fled the abuse and slavery of Egypt. We too have fled the slavery of sin, all of us with one hope in mind that God will fulfil His promises and that we will see His blessings fill the earth because we obeyed Him. We must all take courage in these days, God has a plan, He is in control, the war with the Satan and with sin will be won and there is more than just hope, there is certainty before us that we will reign with Messiah and this world’s evils will be overcome and God’s Kingdom will be restored forever. Hallelujah!

Psalm1:5       Our earthly journey will allow us, at times, to stand with the redeemed in holy awe and worship exhilarated by the presence of our Father.  In the Psalmists’ day these “assemblies of the righteous” would have been joyful times of worship at God’s sanctuary where music played, choirs sang and the people joined in the excitement and corporate wonder of being together in God’s presence. Psalm 119:83 Wineskins in the smoke Well, this verse has caught us by surprise! What does it mean? As we will be aware, in ancient times, wine was not stored in purpose-made glass bottles but in animal skins. In order to keep the skin pliable and soft it must not be allowed to dry out for it would soon shrivel and crack. It follows that the last thing you would do with your treasured wineskins is to hang them up over a smoky fire, not only would they quickly wither but the smoke would clearly ruin the flavour and texture of the wine!  What does the author mean when he says that he is like such a wineskin?  It denotes the uncomfortable condition he was in or at least thought himself to be in; being caught in the midst of smoke is very uncomfortable, and he considered himself to be in darkness with sin and afflictions, like a wineskin in smoke, black and sooty.
