Hebrews 3:14

Our original conviction

Jesus Christ is so gracious and generous in His willingness to share Himself with all those who accept him and believe in Him. He is open and available to all of us, He makes Himself fully accessible no matter who we are; every true follower has immediate and complete access to His wisdom, His comfort and His power. One of the exciting things about travelling is to meet other believers and to instinctively form a bond with them, it is as if we had known them all our lives! We share the same hopes, similar experiences and we love the same Lord and even though they are strangers, these people quickly become our friends. No other religions can make these claims!

Now we need to ask ourselves some important questions: - What was our original conviction? What drove us to faith? What changed, the day we surrendered to Christ? What did we see about ourselves that led us to believe that Jesus Christ was the only solution and the one who could save us? Think back to those moments when our eyes were opened and suddenly everything started to become clear and life changed, forever. That giant leap of faith was not the result of simple intuition or intellectual reasoning; it came because the Holy Spirit intervened and our eyes and ears were opened. Now, have we held on to that moment? Are we clinging tightly to the original conviction? And are we intending to cling on to the very end, the end of our lives or even  the end of this world as we know it? Let us commit to doing so and to grip tightly the conviction that Jesus is Lord and He is our only hope for eternal life and a future in which we will be with Him.

Psalm1:5       Our earthly journey will allow us, at times, to stand with the redeemed in holy awe and worship exhilarated by the presence of our Father.  In the Psalmists’ day these “assemblies of the righteous” would have been joyful times of worship at God’s sanctuary where music played, choirs sang and the people joined in the excitement and corporate wonder of being together in God’s presence. If our own church worship is anything, it should be a prelude to the time when we will join with a numberless throng and sing the praises of the Lamb and the One who sits upon the throne of heaven. Psalm 119:83

Psalm 119:83 Wineskins in the smoke Well, this verse has caught us by surprise! What does it mean? As we will be aware, in ancient times, wine was not stored in purpose-made glass bottles but in animal skins. In order to keep the skin pliable and soft it must not be allowed to dry out for it would soon shrivel and crack. It follows that the last thing you would do with your treasured wineskins is to hang them up over a smoky fire, not only would they quickly wither but the smoke would clearly ruin the flavour and texture of the wine!  What does the author mean when he says that he is like such a wineskin?  It denotes the uncomfortable condition he was in or at least thought himself to be in; being caught in the midst of smoke is very uncomfortable, and he considered himself to be in darkness with sin and afflictions, like a wineskin in smoke, black and sooty.
