Hebrews 1:5
Hebrews 1:5
You are my Son
We are about to read seven different Old Testament quotes that reveal that Christ is superior to the angelic beings. These quotations had existed for centuries but were not fully understood until they were fulfilled by the Lord Jesus. The first quote comes from Psalm 2:7 and is repeated in Acts 13:33 where Paul preached in a synagogue in Pisidian Antioch, a city in modern Turkey. His sermon encompassed large chunks of Jewish history, and he explained how Christ was crucified and then raised from the dead by God. When this happened, God was saying to all creation, this is not just another king who is subject to me and who is loyal to me, “You are my Son and I have become Your Father.”
This conversation took place when Jesus returned to heaven at His ascension. He had been “born again” just as we have been, and He assumed a whole new status and relationship with God His Father. He became “the firstborn from the dead.” The whole of Hebrews chapter 1 describes this event that took place over the 7 days before the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost. At this moment in time, Jesus was anointed and took His place at the right hand of God His Father. He had fulfilled the will of God to the letter, at a cost of great and terrible suffering and self-sacrifice. The curse that lay over all creation had been broken and, at last, it was possible for human beings to be restored to a full relationship with their Maker. God made similar, earthly, promises to David about his son, Solomon and his successors. (see 2 Samuel 7:14) This is astonishing reading, although all of it had been predicted and anticipated throughout the previous centuries. The ancient scholars and rabbis believed it but did not have a clue how it would be fulfilled. As we have seen, Jesus was the exact representation of God when He came to earth, He came to us as the Son of God, He was always the Son of God, but it was His sacrificial offering and complete fulfilment of God’s purposes that elevated Him to the highest honour in heaven and allowed Him to sit on His Father’s throne forever, the most powerful being in the universe. How can we understand this fully? We cannot! Hallelujah!
