Psalm 147:3

He heals the brokenhearted

Even a cursory read of the book of Nehemiah will reveal the hardship and trials experienced by the exiles who returned to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls and re-establish its people. The pain of exile was followed by the broken-hearted wails of those who returned to see the devastation and destruction caused by the conquering Babylonians 70 years before. A few older people made it, the rest of the returnees had lived in hope for their elders had explained the beauty and wonders of the Holy City of Zion. What they came back to was nothing like the pictures that had been painted, the place was just a pile of broken rocks and stones, it had been razed to the ground. If they were to rebuild, they must start from scratch. 

That was a national disaster, but some of us face very personal and private calamities where everything we built and treasured is taken from us and all the walls we erected around ourselves are brought crashing to the ground. The causes can be numerous; financial wreckage, emotional trauma, career crashes, broken promises, family break up, the list is long. Some look upon the broken walls and lose all will to carry on, others try to move a few stones but do so with despair, rebuilding a life is not an easy task.

The Lord knows those whose hearts have been broken, and He watches over those whose walls have been breached. He sees our wounds and understands the extent of the damage and the effect that it has on the victims. Yes, He can heal broken hearts and yes, He can heal the wounds of those who have lost so much. Opposition may rage against us, many will say to us that, “it can’t be done,” but with our God “all things are possible.” Hallelujah!

Psalm1:5       Our earthly journey will allow us, at times, to stand with the redeemed in holy awe and worship exhilarated by the presence of our Father.  In the Psalmists’ day these “assemblies of the righteous” would have been joyful times of worship at God’s sanctuary where music played, choirs sang and the people joined in the excitement and corporate wonder of being together in God’s presence. If our own church worship is anything, it should be a prelude to the time when we will join with a numberless throng and sing the praises of the Lamb and the One who sits upon the throne of heaven. Psalm 119:6

Psalm 119:6 Shameful or shameless The writer of this Psalm clearly describes the dilemma that we all face from time to time. We love to call ourselves believers in the Living God, we align ourselves with His Word and His people. We take some pride in our spiritual walk and the importance of our faith. That is, until we have a moment of honesty, and we truthfully measure ourselves against the standards of the Lord. It is when we look at the true self in the moral mirror that we see the warts and the deformities that have hindered our journey and have made us fall so far short of God’s standards.
