Psalm 138:8
Psalm 138:8
The Lord will vindicate me
Can we say with absolute assurance that “the Lord will vindicate me?” According to some commentators this means that “He will bring an end to my troubles.” In other words, David is saying that despite all the suffering and trouble that life brings, ultimately it will end, and I will “rest in peace.” And this will be God’s doing. One day our enemies will know that they were wrong to persecute us. One day the temporary troubles of life will be put into perspective by the eternal protection and provision of our God. One day, the trials and difficulties will fade like a dream as we enjoy the future provision that God has prepared for all who believe in Him. Why? Because His love endures forever. Psalm 137 made us think a little about God’s judgement of the wicked, a judgement that will be unrestrained and unrelenting; this verse reassures those who are righteous and who believe that we will be eternally saved and loved. Which side would we rather be on? It’s a no-brainer, isn’t it?
It's hard at times, to understand the mindset of those who willingly and deliberately choose to ignore God and to rebel against Him. Despite all evidence to the contrary, these “wise and educated people” choose to dismiss His existence and His authority and to make-do with a few years on this planet rather than to prepare themselves for eternity. There are many who willingly get ready for what lies beyond the grave but who accept any deception that comes their way rather than the grace of the God of truth and light. The Gospel is so convincing that anyone who rejects it has to be a fool. But most do! From some who have accepted Christ and His salvation and who humbly repent before the Lord our Creator comes the plaintive cry, “Do not abandon the works of Your hands.” David knew that this would not happen, the Lord had reassured Him on many occasions, but He was wise enough to understand that we must not take the Lord for granted. If we have any doubts about our future let’s take on board the words of Hebrews 8:6 that compares the certainties of New Testament believers with the doubts of their Old Testament predecessors. “But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which He is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.” He will NOT abandon us! Hallelujah!
