Psalm 135:5

Greater than all the gods

Who is greater than our God when it comes to creative abilities? No one. Who made a universe that contains innumerable galaxies and constellations? God did. Who parted the oceans and created dry land, clothed it with vegetation and filled it with billions of creatures, from the tiniest parasites to great, lumbering mammals? God did. Who put the fish in the sea and the birds in the air and created a ball of fire to rule the day and a reflection of that fire to govern the night? God did. Who devised seasons and tides and winds and frosts and rain and mists? God did. 

We could go on talking about creation but the writer of the Psalm desires us to compare our God with all other gods. The gods of the world’s religions. The gods of superstition, witchcraft and necromancy. The gods of horoscopes, New Ageism, the sects and the Masons. The gods of philosophy, science, politics and all other man-made influences when they do not acknowledge the Lord. The gods of materialism, achievement, self and prosperity that drive men and women to promote themselves at the expense of others.

The lists of the gods are endless, some are man-made but there are others that are the brainchildren of a devious genius who considers himself the supreme being and who devises every scheme possible to undermine, devalue and provide alternatives to the one true God, the maker of heaven and earth. The Satan’s never-ending production line of false deities has been in operation since the Garden of Eden, and it seems to be increasing in power, influence and ingenuity. Please do not fall for his tricks and his deceptions. Please do not worship anything or anyone other that Yahweh. Please do not even venture down any of the enemy’s enticing pathways. The Lord is the greatest. Our Lord is greater than all the gods and we can and must trust in Him and Him alone. Hallelujah!

Psalm18:15    A blast of breath    This verse transports us back to the exodus and Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, described in Exodus 14.  The people took an unexpected route away from their captors, no doubt the Egyptians thought it ill-advised as the Israelites found themselves confronted by a vast area of swamp and water known as the Sea of Reeds or the Red Sea. Psalm 119:135

Psalm 119:135 His shining face In verse 58 0f the Psalm we commented on the apparent impossibility of being able to see the face of God. And yet this intimacy was something that the psalmists, and other writers, craved. The High Priestly blessing, prayed over the people every day, asks that the Lord make His face shine upon them. In verse 58 we discovered that this plea involved more than just being able to see the face of God, which was impossible; I quote,  “ The Hebrew word for face in the Old Testament can be translated “presence.” Now things start to make more sense!
