Psalm 135:4
Psalm 135:4
Israel is God's treasured possession
Listen to these words, spoken to Abraham when he was first called to leave Ur of the Chaldeans and journey to the land that the Lord would show him. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:2-3.
Later God would say to Abraham, “The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will giveas an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.” Genesis 17:8.
However, the Lord also made it abundantly clear that the land of Israel did not belong to the Jews, it was God’s land. “The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.” Leviticus 25:23.
God chose Jacob and gave him the name “Israel.” He chose the descendants of Jacob to be His own people. God chose the land of the Canaanites to be the place where the Israelites would make their home and be able to settle. Notice that His promises to them are everlasting. Notice too that those who bless Israel will be blessed by God and those who curse Israel will be cursed by God. Israel is His treasured possession.
On 7th October 2023 Israel was surrounded by curses. They were invaded by Hamas; they were being subjected daily to missile attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen. They were the enemies of President Assad’s regime in Syria and Iranian-controlled forces in Iraq. In fact, Iran had launched and armed all of these militias to war against Israel and to drive them into the sea. I write this on 18th June 2025. The Assad regime in Syria has fallen. The Houthis have warships from western nations patrolling their coastline. Hamas and Hezbollah are finished, and Iran itself is on the brink of total collapse. Israel, with a population of just 9 million, a tiny nation occupying a tiny strip of land is currently regarded as the fourth strongest military country in the world after America, China and Russia! Those who curse God’s treasured possession are foolish in the extreme. There is only one God and His name is not Allah. He keeps His promises, and He watches over His people, even when they do not trust in Him!
