Psalm 129:4
Psalm 129:4
He cuts me free
Throughout our studies in the Psalms we have reflected on the righteousness of the Lord our God. We have discovered that true righteousness does not stand alone, it is not static, it is active. If God is righteous than He must be fair and reasonable but also holy in His judgements. If He is righteous, He must be faithful and true to those who believe in Him and who obey Him. Everything about this God we trust in, is a reflection of His righteousness, even His grace and love are righteous and only granted to those who are made clean by the blood of the Lamb. God is always faithful because of His righteous commitment to those He loves and to those who acknowledge Him as King. He is righteous when He protects those who are weak. He is righteous when He vindicates those who have been oppressed. He is righteous when He provides for those in need. Each of these responses, and many more, are a direct consequence of His righteous character.
The psalmist saw this being played out in his own life and the life of the nation of Israel. The fact that the wicked aggressors had only known temporary victory, that the cords of their brutality and dominance had been broken was unquestionable evidence of the righteousness of the Lord. We need to remember this when we are set free, when our enemies retreat, when the darkness flees and the sun shines through, when the cords of despair are broken, that it is the Lord who is at work for is and in us. He will cut me free for He is righteous. He will sharpen the blade of truth and slash through the deceit and lies of the enemy so that I may walk free. Hallelujah!
