Psalm 125:4

Psalm 125:4

A message for the good

Is there anyone who qualifies as being good? Notice the different emphasis in this verse between the Lord who DOES good and those people who ARE good. It goes without saying that God is good, but is it possible that there are human beings who are also good? Paul did not think so when he wrote Romans 3:10-12. As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

Paul later goes on to explain that righteousness before God is not based on our works but on our faithNow to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness. David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.” Romans 4:4-8.

Have we fully grasped this truth, that however hard we try, we cannot make ourselves righteous? However, the Lord does not accept us on the basis of our efforts or our hard-earned goodness, what He is interested in is our faith. Those who are the “good” in today’s verse, are those who have submitted to God by faith, who have learned to trust Him for their salvation, who have righteousness credited to them because of their faith. These are the upright in heart and the Lord will do good to them. To us?
