Psalm 111:6

Whose side should we take?

The whole of the Old Testament, or the Hebrew Scriptures, hinges on the Covenant promises that God made, firstly to Abraham, then to Jacob and Moses, and to the Israelites as a nation. His promise to Abraham was, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.”Genesis 15:7. The land in question was, of course, Canaan. Later, the Lord spoke through Moses and told him, “I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites – a land flowing with milk and honey.” Exodus 3:17. 

The granting of land by the Lord God as a special privilege to a chosen people is difficult for many to grasp today. It is this age-old link between the Sovereign Lord and a distinct race or nation that continues to divide opinion, particularly when those people tend to disregard Him! But His commands and His covenant promises still remain, and we have to trust Him in this. In our time, the Jews have regained their homeland, they have fought, many times, to retain it and will continue to do so. The nations around them will continue to scheme to take it back again, just as they have throughout history, and time and time again the Lord has had to deliver those people by miraculous means. It has made the Jews a hated race and it has caused division in the Middle East for centuries. 

The conflicts have brought about bitter division in the church as well, for it is difficult to support a nation that shows little regard for its God, that rejected His Son and refuses to acknowledge Him as Messiah, a nation that despises the Christian Church and refuses to give God the glory for all that He has done. In so doing, the Jews have incurred His wrath many, many times. Our position, as believers, is not to take sides in the human conflict but to take God’s side in the spiritual one. The Satan has warred against Israel for centuries because they are God’s chosen, and he will continue to do so until his time is up. In that scenario we must take God’s side and stand with His people. Hallelujah!

Psalm 51:4

Psalm 51:4 Deliberate sin In Genesis 20 we read the story of Abimelek and Abraham. The latter had passed off his wife Sarah as his sister and Abimelek had taken her with a view to her becoming his wife. The relationship was not consummated, and the Lord used a dream to reveal to Abimelek just what was going on. The insulted king pleaded innocence,  “I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands ” he said, to the Lord. And God agreed,  “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me.”  This is a big subject but there is clearly a difference between sinful intentions and deeds where the participant knows that he/she is doing wrong, and those occasions where an action is carried out in innocence.  David knew all along that every detail of his relationship with Bathsheba was sinful, as were his actions in the cover-up. Psalm 57:8

Psalm 57:8 Awake my soul! This verse calls on three different elements to wake up! It follows on from the previous statement that David intends to sing and make music. We can imagine him opening his eyes one morning and all is silent and dark. The first birds have not yet started to sing, and the eastern sky is not yet pink. In contrast to the days of despair and defeat David is ready for this day and he is going to celebrate. He may be living in a gloomy, dank cave but hope is at hand, God is with him and he will triumph over his enemies.
