Hebrews 5:5
Hebrews 5:5
You are my Son, today I have become Your Father.
Having reviewed the processes by which earthly High Priests were appointed, we now turn to the appointment of Yeshua! The author is quick to point out that Jesus did not claim this role for Himself, in fact when we look at His life and His relationships, we could say that He steered well away from the earthly priesthood and had little time for their status or roles, as they did of His! There is no evidence that Jesus was ambitious or eager to impress His fellow men – anything but. His appointment was by the Father, but the terms of engagement are mind-blowing!
In selecting His Son, God the Father speaks in the language of Psalm 27:7 “You are my Son; today I have become Your Father.” He then goes on to describe the kingly rule of Jesus and His role in subjugating all the nations of the earth. Thus we must assume that, in God’s eyes, the roles of King and High Priest overlap, and that the position that Jesus was being appointed to involved becoming High Priest of the whole earth as well as its King. Not only that but God also re-emphasizes that Yeshua is His Son and therefore He has three titles and roles to fulfil for which He, and He alone, is qualified. Remember too, that God the Father and His Son are one and the same, so that when we look to Jesus Christ we see and hear God, but we also see and hear the supreme High Priest over all the earth, (please do not transfer this title to any man – or woman)! In Jesus we also acknowledge the one great King who exceeds the power and authority of all other earthly rulers. In this definition, the “sons of God” are those who are appointed to rule. Just as angels are given this title so are the priests of God, and Jesus surpasses them all. But think on this, believers too are a kingdom of priests who have been elevated to be called “sons of God” and are able to claim that Jesus is our brother and thus we will be qualified to reign with Him! Wow! Wow! Wow!
One more thought! Whilst Jesus came to this world fully qualified to proclaim that He was the Son of God and to call God His Father, there was one final link in the chain that He had to put in place. Just as any heir can claim to be a successor and member of a privileged family, they do not claim their inheritance until there is a death. In His death Jesus Christ proved His title and rightful place as the Son of God. As Paul puts it in Roman 1:4 “through the Spirit of holiness He was appointed the Son of God in power by His resurrection from the dead.” If there were any doubts on earth or in heaven as to the credentials of Yeshua, these were laid to rest in a tomb and completely dispelled by His resurrection.
