Hebrews 3:3

Hebrews 3:3

The Builder of the House

Moses was never the builder of Israel. Abraham laid the cornerstone and it could be argued that Job provided the foundations. By the time of Moses, the walls had been put in place, but the building process was still under way. Moses did not design this house, nor did he complete its construction, he was just part of the fabric. I guess we might argue that at his time it was a temporary structure, and Moses oversaw its’ transportation to a more suitable and permanent site. Israel was a “mobile home” under Moses.

Not so with Yeshua, He was not just the cornerstone but the capstone as well, He is the final stone that holds the entire structure together. He is the foundation of our faith, He is the protective walls that surround us, He is the roof that covers our heads, and He is the future hope of the full potential and glory of the building. It is not a temporary building either, it will remain forever, but its influence embraces the whole world. Jesus is the actual builder of this mighty household, and every stone or brick was chosen and put in place by Him.

In arguing all of this, the author of Hebrews is seeking to demonstrate to his Jewish readers that in every way, Yeshua outranks and surpasses the role of Moses. Moses was part of the building; Jesus is the architect and builder of His church. The point has already been made that He is greater than all angelic beings, but now we have to accept that He is also greater than all the distinguished and celebrated men in Israel’s past history.

There is a further point to be made. When we humans travel to places and gaze in awe at some of the astonishing structures that have been built by men, we tend to admire the building simply because we have no relationship with or tangible conception of the person who designed and built what stands before us. The opposite is true with the church, its many stones are often anonymous and hard to identify, we cannot see the whole, for the church has been around for centuries and comprises believers from every country and continent. What we can see is the architect and builder who is just as visible and real today as He was when the project took off, 2,000 years ago! We see Jesus in every stone! Hallelujah!
