Hebrews 2:9

Hebrews 2:9

But we do see Jesus

What a glorious change of direction! From the failings of humanity, we are whisked heavenwards to fix our eyes on Yeshua. Whilst all other members of the human race have so far failed in their mission, He has not!  The world is not subject to the righteous and just rule of men, but one man came and perfectly fulfilled the will of God and demonstrated what is possible if we are faithful and obedient.

This verse establishes the fatal problem that hangs like a cloud over the earth, it is death. The ultimate outcome of a life on earth, a life provided and sustained by God, is death. This is also the ultimate outrage, for He is the giver of life and had always planned that we should share in this eternal gift. Our destiny is to live, with Him, forever. The Satan challenged this destiny right at the beginning and mankind has chosen to accept the ways of sin and evil and the annihilation that they bring, rather than to revere and obey the living God. An empty and pointless expiry faces us all unless we “see Jesus, crowned with glory and honour.” He is the only living being who has managed to suffer death and to claim victory over it. He did this for us all, He suffered my death and your death so that we might be offered the gift of His life!

Humanity can still fulfil its destiny and rule over the earth. Jesus stepped down into our shoes; remember we are made a little lower than the angels, so He humbled Himself and become one of us so that we might find our ultimate fulfilment in God’s kingdom that is to come. Much of this verse find its roots in a song of King David who foresaw all of this when he wrote about humans, “You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” Psalm 8:5-9
