Hebrews 2:7
The roles of men and angels
Psalm 82 opens our eyes to the existence of the “elohim” or the “sons of God” who worship daily in His presence and who contribute to the activities in the heavenly courts or the “great assembly”. Many believe that these are just human rulers and leaders but there is good reason to take this one step further and today’s verse supports the theory that the Bible gives us an insight into the activities of heavenly beings. Scripture teaches that there are those who are faithful and obedient servants of the Lord but others who have wilfully chosen to disobey Him. As our text shows us, mankind is created to be just a little lower than these celestial beings. We were originally crowned with glory and honour and meant to reflect the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord over all living things. Our role was to manage and protect His earth and all of creation and to rule with justice and righteousness. Angels would be available to help in this task, but it fell, primarily, to human beings to oversee all that God had made. In so doing we would be a reflection of the activities of the angels in the heavenly realms.
In exalting ourselves and discrediting the Lord, we have neglected our tasks and have allowed the world to sink towards chaos and disaster to the point where it is no longer under our control. The heady days of man’s ascendency are long gone and all creation groans at the burden we have brought upon it. What a far cry from the privileged role we were destined to play and from the glorious possibilities of our designated status. When we look at the world today, we cannot truthfully affirm that mankind is crowned with glory and honour, nor is everything subject to us. If we do things God’s way and obey Him, such subjection is possible. If we run the earth our way, it will never happen!
