Hebrews 1:13
Hebrews 1:13
Sit at my right hand
The author of this wonderful letter is still trying to make his point that Jesus Christ the Son of God, is far superior to any angel. Remember that this is written primarily to Jewish believers and thus any argument could be settled by quoting from the Scriptures, which were sacrosanct in Jewish thinking. If the Psalms said it, then it must be true, especially a Psalm of King David, and this quotation does indeed come from the pen of David and is the opening line from Psalm 110. In that Psalm God speaks to one who is sovereign over David, who is his Lord, and tells that Lord to sit at His right hand.
The right hand is, as we know, a position of favour and authority and to sit in this position suggests longevity and permanence. Jesus was offered this seat on His return to heaven and this verse repeats what we are told in verse 2. “After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” In other words, Jesus is now ruling over all creation with His Father and has been granted equal superiority and power. This accolade was never granted to an angel, they may gather before the throne of God, some may have their say in the heavenly courts, others are granted missions on the earth as God wills it, but none are invited to share in His rule and reign and to dare to call themselves God! One celestial traitor tried it, Lucifer the angel of light, thought that he was qualified for this power-sharing role and has been damned ever since! He wanted that power for His own glory; Jesus wanted it only for the glory of His Father. The greatest acts of faithfulness and devotion can be viewed in His words and action on the earth. God had no other way to save mankind from sin and no other test that could be set before a heavenly being other than the sacrifice of the cross. There’s no way that the Satan or any other angel would have brought that suffering upon themselves for the sake of the Lord God and His reputation. Hallelujah for our Lord who is seated at the right hand of Almighty God!
