Psalm 149:9
Psalm 149:9
The Lord will carry out the sentences that are written
Let’s remember that this powerful statement begins in verse 5 where the Lord’s faithful people rejoice because of the delight that He has in them. These faithful ones are encouraged to rejoice in this honour, to sing at bedtime and to never stop praising their God. His Word is their weapon against wickedness, and the Lord intends to bring justice and vengeance against the nations and the peoples and all those arrogant rulers who defy Him. Verse 9 now goes on to describe a heavenly charter or register of God’s decisions. This book has no name, although we read in Revelation of the Lamb’s Book of Life and that faithful believers’ names are recorded there. At the time of God’s final judgement of the wicked we read that books are opened – “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.” Revelation 20:12.
It is both chilling and comforting to know that all deeds are recorded, no one “gets away with it.” The comfort comes from knowing that the Lord Jesus, through His work at the cross “Blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross.” Colossians 2:14.
So, there we have it. It’s all written down, what you and I and every other human being has done in our lives. The laws we broke, the disobedience and the rebellion we enjoyed, the times we blasphemed the name of our Creator – every thought, every word, every deed. All of these offences are recorded, and a just trial will, one day, be carried out and our sentence pronounced. Except that… Except that for those who believe, their Charge Sheet has been torn out and nailed to the cross! This is the glory of all God’s faithful people and there is evidence to suggest that they (or we) may be involved in the judgement process on earth one day – but that is another subject. Praise the Lord!
