Psalm 146:3
Psalm 146:3
Do not put your trust in princes
The news headlines, each and every day, are full of the exploits of the “princes.” In other words, the rulers and leaders of the world who make the big decisions, who represent their people and who seek solutions to the world’s problems. So, we have endless Conferences, Nato, UN, G20, G7 etc, all of which are reported in the media, and we follow the daily TV News providing coverage of their arrivals and departures from various countries around the world. Occasionally, they make decision that are ratified in some treaty or another while the signatories smile benignly at the watching members of the world’s press. Similar scenarios unfold at national and more local levels, where our elected politicians (or not) seek to appeal to their supporters and to show themselves to be caring and trustworthy leaders.
Can these men and women save us? No! Can they change the direction that the world is going? No! Will their input have eternal effects on the history of the planet? No! Will any of these people be able to ultimately resolve the battle between good and evil, between the Satan and God? No! So why do we put so much faith in them? Why do even Christian believers get so wound up about politics and the various antics of the “princes?”
The Bible encourages us to pray for these people (1 Timothy 2:2) but we are not instructed to follow them or to take any side. It’s perhaps telling that Yeshua visited earth at a very turbulent time, He never travelled beyond Israel, He made no peace deals with the rulers of His day. The Romans and the Caesars were a dominant world power. The Jews were led by an big-headed and egotistical oligarch called “Herod the Great” (emphasis on great). The Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling Council, was corrupt and arrogant and dominated by wealthy and power-seeking individuals, but our Lord never commented, He did not get involved, instead He concentrated on promoting His Kingdom, the Kingdom of heaven. We need to remember that we do not belong to this world, we are called to a greater destiny; to serve the King of kings and Lord of lords, we have no reason to trust in human beings who cannot save us. We have one King, one Prince and one Prime Minister who attends to all our concerns and who is available for personal consultations 24/7. Hallelujah!
