Psalm 143:12
Psalm 143:12
Silence my enemies
It’s not difficult to identify David’s enemies and his foes, for history records the facts and tells us their names. In the case of the Israelites, their kings and their prophets, their enemies were always men and women with names, who lived and breathed on this planet and whose lives ran parallel with the righteous.
The identification of enemies for those who follow the Lord Jesus is not so easy, as the Apostle Paul reminds us, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12. So, we are fighting against forces that we cannot see, or hear or touch, these are nameless enemies who do their work in the shadows but who often make themselves known through other human beings! There are some clues here as to who is on the enemy’s payroll. Their language and behaviour betray their allegiances; they are people who plot and scheme against the Lord and against His people. Their language and their behaviour betray them for they reveal themselves to be in rebellion against our God.Anyone who blasphemes or curses the name of the Lord is our enemy even if we do not personally have a grievance against them. Anyone who brazenly sins and breaks the laws of the Lord without shame is also our enemy because they live in rebellion against their Creator and against our Father. That seems to embrace an awful lot of people, not surprisingly, for we are a tiny minority in a world of dissenters.
Like David, can we pray “Silence my enemies?” Can we ask the Lord to destroy our foes? The world of insidious and devious powers is all around us and it seems that we have the right to ask the Lord our God to “shut them up” and to disarm them as He will do one day, of course, especially their king, the prince of darkness.
