Psalm 142:3

Psalm 142:3

Faint hearts and faint spirits

This verse reminds us of Psalm 22 and the heart cry of Yeshua as He faced the agony and separation of the cross. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.” David does not refer to his physical suffering, or his health, he was still a young man when these events unfolded. Yeshua too, was a young man when He suffered and died for us. It was their mental state that troubled them, our spirits grow faint when we lose the will to keep going, when the obstacles are so great and the odds are stacked in the opposition’s favour. Both David and Jesus knew that the way ahead was full of pain and suffering, both anticipated that it would end in death!

Faint hearts are frightened hearts and so are faint spirits, we are at the point when we’ve run out of ideas and there seems to be no way out of a dilemma. We all have times like this, when we can do no more, when our human instincts tell us that we are doomed, when the enemy forces are too great. It is at these times that true believers in the Lord God have to throw themselves upon Him and surrender to His will and His protection. As we have seen, David is only too aware that there are traps and snares everywhere, he hardly dares venture beyond the entrance of Adullum’s Cave, he trusts no one and there appears to be no way out of his predicament.

When life gets this bad, when the opposition forces are overwhelming and when we see no way forwards, that is the time when we have no choice but to throw ourselves on the Lord’s mercy, for only He can bring us through. If David and Jesus could bear witness to this, then we too can trust that our God will be there for us. Hallelujah!
