Psalm 141:1
Psalm 141:1
Hear me when I call - please!
After spending time with King David and reading his outbursts against his enemies in Psalm 140, we might be ready to move on! But no, he continues to be angered by their threats and their actions, although the beleaguered King pays some attention to his own words and actions so we cannot accuse him of hypocrisy. Many readers skip over these Psalms, indeed we all like to be filled with positive thoughts that uplift us and inspire us, why spend so much time wringing our hands and grinding our teeth over the plots and schemes of the wicked? Perhaps these songs are a reality check, the real world is full of wickedness, all followers of Yeshua are besieged by evil at times, there are countless plots to silence us and to belittle our faith, the enemy never gives up and never withdraws. Let’s get into the real world and learn from David, shall we?
V1 This sounds a bit presumptuous, it’s hardly the cry of a humble, respectful servant of the greatest Being in the universe. It’s as if David is saying, “Hi You, I’m trying to get Your attention, when I call Your name would You answer me straight away, please? Do I have to keep repeating my requests? Where are You? Would You grant me the favour of listening when I call?” Honestly, would any of us dream of talking to God this way? Well, we might, if our situation was dire enough, when there was no other means of salvation and we were fearing for our lives! In moments of stress and grave danger who knows how we might call out to the Lord? And praise be to His Name, He understands and listens!
David was constantly under attack from his enemies, this man was hounded from his youth, some believe that these Psalms were written when he and his man were living in the cave of Adullum. This was at the time he was being pursued by King Saul, and David and his men were fearful for their lives, we read all about this in 1 Samuel 22 and 24. As you will see, God heard David’s prayer, and He answered in an amazing way. So, if we are under threat and there appears to be no way of escape, let’s not be afraid to tell the Lord exactly how we feel.
