Psalm 140:6
Psalm 140:6
You are my God!
It’s no coincidence that we are confronted here by David’s heart cry to God, something that the next few Psalms will replicate, for we all need to stop at times and ask, “Who is our God?” Most Christians would look indignant when asked this question and reply, “The God of the Bible of course. The God we worship in our church. The God of our ancestors. The God who created heaven and earth. The God of the Christian faith.” And yes, our God is all of those things but is He truly God of you and me? Is He the One who we worship above everyone and everything? Is He the One we turn to in trouble? Is He the One we think of when we lay down to sleep and when we awake? Is He Lord of all that we possess or own? Is He God of our families, our relationships, our work and our play? Is He our God when we sit in front of the TV or scroll through Apps on our phones? Is He the God who made every tree and blade of grass that grows around us and every cloud in the sky? Does He speak to us through the songs of the birds or the whisper of the wind in the trees? Is He God when we sit down to eat or when we take the wheel of a car? Most of all, do we take time out every day to spend alone with Him and also in sharing Him with those we love? Is His Word, the most treasured possession that we own? Please do not think that I can answer all these questions in the affirmative and that it has been that way for the whole of my life. We all need to be honest with ourselves at times and simply ask, how important is God to me, what is my evaluation of Him and what kind of place does He occupy in my daily priorities?
If God means very little to us, is there any reason why He would hear our cries for mercy? Especially if we only call on Him in times of crisis or need and then ignore Him when all is going well. If God is our God, then let us make Him God – of everything!
