Psalm 139:7
Psalm 139:7
The presence of God's Holy Spirit
We are all aware of the dramatic arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, as recorded in the early chapters of the Book of Acts. This was a new experience for the apostles and other disciples, but one that Jesus had prepared them for. The coming of the Spirit of God, poured out from heaven, brought power, boldness, gifts and a sense of the presence of the Lord that these early believers had not expected, and it turned their lives upside down - or the right way up! As members of the body of Christ we all have access to this same Spirit and are eligible for His empowering, if we are willing to submit to Him.
Many students of the Bible fail to notice that the Holy Spirit is spoken of frequently in the Old Testament. God brought about creation through His Spirit and His Word. He equipped His servants for their appointed tasks by His Spirit. The Spirit of God inspired the prophets and directed their ministries and David himself had earlier pleaded with the Lord to not “take Your Holy Spirit from me.” Psalm 51:11. David is so conscious of this inner anointing that he realises that he can never flee from it, wherever he goes the Lord is with him by His Spirit.
How empty and pointless our spiritual journeys would be without the Holy Spirit! This is the breath of God directly from heaven that not only empowers and authorises us but that also indwells our innermost beings and fills us with the comfort and joy of His presence. Without Him our task is hopeless and bound to fail. Without Him our faith is just a religion, it lacks personality and intimacy. Who would want to flee from the Holy Spirit’s presence? He’s the best thing we will ever experience in this world, without Him we are empty vessels. If we are failing in our daily walk with the Lord or lacking the power to operate in the roles He has called us to, then let’s pray for the Holy Spirit to fill us afresh and yet more so that we can fulfil our calling in this world.
