Psalm 136:13-14

Psalm 136:13-14

He divided the Red Sea

There have long been debates about the exact location where the Israelites crossed the Red Sea. Some people say that the Red Sea is actually the Reed Sea and that there may have been passably dry areas where the people were able to cross over! Others look for shallower waters further south and there are modern discoveries that suggest that the crossing took place at the southern end of the modern-day Gulf of Suez, opposite Mount Sinai.

Let’s look at the facts as described in Exodus 14. Firstly, God used a strong east wind that blew all night to turn the proposed route into dry land. Secondly, the water that was parted stood like a wall on the left and the right of the travellers as they passed through. Thirdly, when the water flowed back into place, it was sufficiently deep to drown the entire Egyptian army! By the way, my wife and I learned recently, on a guided trip round the British Museum, that when ancient civilisations like the Egyptians wrote about or depicted events in their history, they would leave out humiliating or forgettable moments! Even the names and activities of Pharaohs were overlooked if they didn’t come up smelling of roses! So, the Bible is the only evidence we have of the crossing of the Red Sea and let’s not question its accuracy.

This is our God, the One whose love endures forever, when we are in a tight spot and enemy forces are amassed on the horizon, we can trust that He is able to deliver. Not only that, He has miraculous abilities to not only protect and provide for His people but also to destroy their enemies. Israel is evidence of this to this very day; we who are in the family of God may trust Him for the same protection and care for His love endures forever
