Psalm 136:4

The great wonders of God

It’s not too difficult to grasp that God’s “wonders” are the creative things that He does, the miracles of life and creation, the seasons, the daily rising of the sun and its setting, the weather patterns that envelop the earth and the provision of food for all living creatures. As believers, we can testify to God’s influence and intervention in our lives, and many can recount stories of His protective love and care. All these things are easily identifiable “wonders”.

Going back in time, the Bible teaches us that even the calamitous plagues that struck Egypt were some of the wonders of God. Listen to His words to Moses at the Burning Bush. “But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him. So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.” Exodus 3:19-20. Job got a grasp on this subject after he had reviewed some aspects of creation and the vastness of the universe and the constellations, he wrote, “He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.”Job 9:10.

It seems to me that we can have a number of attitudes to all of this. We can take the side of the atheists or the evolutionists, and view a universe full of wonders but one that is completely uninfluenced by a divine being. Such people spend a pointless lifetime trying to find alternative explanations for everything! Alternatively, we can see the complexity of it all and be amazed at times but just take it for granted, because to attribute the wonders of creation to a divine being immediately calls for faith and accountability. It means nailing your colours to one mast or another and most folk can’t be bothered to take on the challenge.

The best way to view God’s wonders is to acknowledge His power and authority and then to spend a lifetime being increasingly amazed and surprized at the beauty and glory of it all. His wonders surround us. His wonders are performed every single day. His wonders come gift-wrapped in love and are designed to overwhelm us with the glory of His character. The Apostle Paul sums it up like this, “For since the creation of the word God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:20. I’m with him, aren’t you?
