Psalm 126:1

Psalm 126:1

Dreaming of Zion

This is another short Psalm that is added to the catalogue of the “Songs of Ascents”. These are songs that express great devotion to Zion or Jerusalem and it’s Temple. The singers were not just thrilled by architecture and buildings, they came to Zion to meet with their God. The ceremonies and annual festivals were the highlight of their year and all who lived in that land, and beyond, made at least one pilgrimage to the great city. This was a time of celebration for families and communities, and the streets would be packed with worshippers. As they ascended the hill to the Temple Mount, the air would be filled with music and songs and men like David and Asaph were the composers of these festive psalms.

V1        It is thought that Psalm126 was especially written to express the joy of those Jews who had survived exile in Babylon and who were now able to return to the Holy City and partake in its festivals once again. Hence, this wonderful opening line, “When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed.” In other words, the wonder and joy of “coming home”, of hearing the familiar music and songs, of seeing the restored buildings, was so marvellous that many people pinched themselves and wondered if they were dreaming! For years they had endured captivity in a far-away land and now they were free, and the greatest treasure was to return to Zion.

Regardless of who we are and how old we are and what we have endured in our lives, the Lord God gives us moments of exaltation and joy. Moments of wonder, when our dreams are realised and we relive the glories of the past. However, that is nothing compared to the day when we will truly “return home” and meet the Lord face to face. The heavenly Zion is where we belong, and it awaits our homecoming. Hallelujah!
