Psalm 119:60

Psalm 119:60

Hasten, don't delay

The major area of conflict for every believer in God and follower of Christ, is the mind. The human mind is a battleground and for those of us who trust in the Lord, the warfare is relentless. We have three sources of input into our minds: -

1.     Our own learning and understanding – our wisdom and knowledge

2.     The input from the Holy Spirit who resides within us

3.     The lies and deceit propounded by the devil and displayed all around us

The arbitrator in the constant daily battle between these forces is conscience and our conscience allows us to choose whose voice we will follow. However, if that conscience has been fine-tuned by the Word of God and by the Holy Spirit, evil thoughts, words and actions very quickly become a source of great anxiety and regret. This is the battleground and the conflicts within it are relentless and very wearing at times. As the Apostle Paul writes, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12: 2.

The Psalm writer may not have benefitted from the eloquent letters of the Apostle, but he saw the wisdom in obeying God’s commands. He realised that to prevaricate over matters of conscience was disastrous, the best way to keep the Law was to hasten and not delay, to put into action what God had commanded quickly – before opposing forces stepped in and swept away his good intentions. There’s a lesson here for us all!
