Psalm 119:35

Psalm 119:35

Direct me in Your path

One of the features of this Psalm that catches the eye, is the constant reference to ways or paths. The writer is quite clearly on a journey, before him he sees various tracks or routes and he is obviously aware that he regularly has to make choices. The verse before us is a case in point, perhaps there is a crossroads ahead and it is imperative that right choices are made, that the right direction is taken.

“Direct me in the path of Your commands” is a prayer that all of us can and should regularly make. There are so many options in life, so many choices, we want to go God’s way, we need to follow His path. To go off-track is not only disobedient and pointless, but it also wastes an awful lot of time. The journey of the Israelites highlights this, when they arrived at the southern border of Canaan, after only a few months of travel, the path chosen by the Lord took them into the land. However, the people did not believe that it was possible to subdue their enemies and so they rebelled. The rebellion led to 40 wasted years and most of them never got to reach their destination!

There is an incentive for sticking to the path of God’s commands – “for there I find delight.” His is the way of fulfilment, constant surprises, protection, guidance and care. No matter how difficult the terrain or dark the valleys, He goes with us and safe arrival at our destination is guaranteed. That should fill us all with delight.
