Psalm 119:2

Psalm 119:2

Blessed are those who keep His statutes

Verse 1 tells us that those “who walk according to the law of the Lord,” are blessed. This next verse instructs us that those who “keep His statutes and seek Him with all their heart,” are also blessed. The word for “statutes” here is “edot”, and it refers to the stipulations of the covenant that God had made with His ancient people, Israel. The covenant with Moses begins with the Ten Commandments. As we are all aware, the covenant laws and rules were very specific and detailed, the Jews still study them and vary in their opinions as to the meaning of many of these rules. However, the people were commanded to obey the laws and were clearly told that if they did so, they would be blessed, and if they broke them, they would be cursed. Their history proves this. The entire law and all its conditions were read out loud every 7 years, to all the people, including the children, when they assembled during the Feast of Tabernacles. Deuteronomy 30:9-13. No one had an excuse that they did not know the terms and conditions of the covenant God made with them. In fact, the people were commanded to teach the laws to their children who were expected to learn them off by heart, starting with Leviticus!

The Lord is gracious, He knew that once His people had settled in the Land of Promise, they would become wayward and look for other gods. Listen to His words in Deuteronomy 4: 29-31. “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul. When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey Him. For the Lord your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which He confirmed to them by oath.”

This God is our God and His word still stands and He still keeps His covenant promises. Hallelujah!
