Psalm 115:2
Psalm 115:2
Where is their God?
The division of the “gods” among the nations happened after Babel. “When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He divided all mankind, He set up the boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of God (the elohim.) For the Lord’s portion is His people, Jacob His allotted inheritance.”Deuteronomy 32:8-9. Deuteronomy 4 warns Israel against worshipping idols and bowing down to the heavenly bodies, all things that the Lord has “apportioned to all the nations under heaven.” (v19). In other words, the God of the Old Testament chose Israel alone to be His inheritance, both the people and then the land that He gave them. All the other nations were allocated out and could not know YAHWEH, unless they came through the nation of priests – Israel. Thus, they worshipped the sun and the moon and the stars. Thus, they made their idols and did obeisance to images and objects made of wood and stone for they had no access to the one true God. Consequently, they despised the Israelites who claimed to know the Creator and worshipped him in complicated and curious ways that left no room for hedonistic practices and veneration of objects that could be seen and touched.
All of this is the background to today’s verse, the nations brayed and jeered when calamities came upon Israel. They sniggered and derided God’s people when enemies overcame them, and how they must have delighted in the destruction caused by the Assyrians and later, the Babylonians. Their scepticism about the existence of the Lord Most High was vindicated when He apparently failed to protect and guard His people. Nothing has changed, either for Israel or for those of us who believe in the same God. When the world taunts us for our failures and our misfortunes, remember that they are really taunting Him!
Water You turned into wine
Opened the eyes of the blind
There's no one like you
None like you
Into the darkness You shine
Out of the ashes we rise
There's No one like you
None like you
Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God You are higher than any other
Our God is Healer, awesome in power
Our God, Our God
And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?
And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?
Then what can stand against?
Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God You are higher than any other
Our God is Healer, awesome in power
Our God, Our God
