Psalm 112:9

Psalm 112:9

Gifts to the poor

There is a powerful text all about giving in 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 and the words here in today’s verse are repeated. Here is an extract: Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”  Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.  You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”

It was a verse like verse 9 of Psalm 112 that prompted the repentant tax collector, Zacchaeus, to say to Jesus, “here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor.” Luke 19:8. These acts are seen as visible signs of righteousness, for a truly righteous person will act justly and that means having concern for those who are in need. As Psalm 106:3 reminded us, “Blessed are those who act justly, who always do what is right.” Just as God’s covenant promises to us are founded on justice and righteousness, He expects that our response to Him will be prompted by similar attitudes. When Jesus talked about our righteousness, He used the phrase “Laying up treasure in heaven.” That is how we will accumulate a deposit that will last forever and how our status or renown (horn) will be lifted high in honour. Just as God’s Name is held in holy awe, so those who act in godly ways will also be exalted! Hallelujah!
