Psalm 105:10

Psalm 105:10

An everlasting covenant

Most of us are familiar with the story of Jacob when he had a dream and saw, “a stairway (or ladder) resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” This story, in Genesis 28, goes on to describe the Lord standing above the ladder, and He said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

This was the decree that the Lord gave to Jacob who was, of course, destined to have his name changed by God to Israel! This was a fixed agreement, instituted by the Lord God for all time, an everlasting covenant. That is why I cannot understand that there are Christians who are anti-Israel and who maintain that the Jews have no rights to the ancient lands. Surely, the last 75 years have taught us all that the Lord does keep His word, that when He makes a covenant, He never reneges. We learn from all this that when, because of disobedience and unbelief, we turn against the Lord, He never turns against us. Two thousand years may have passed since the rejection of Messiah by Israel, but the Lord always intended to honour His word and to restore His people and their land. We see these promises being fulfilled in our lifetimes and should rejoice. Why? Just because the Jews have been re-established in Israel? No, because if the ancient covenants are being fulfilled at this point in history it means that all other promises God has made will also be fulfilled, the promises He has made to us, His church, that Jesus Christ will return, that we will be saved along with Israel! Hallelujah!
