Psalm 104:13

Psalm 104:13

He waters the mountains

Like you, I watch the TV weather forecasts with interest. We are especially addicted to these in a country like the UK where weather patterns differ dramatically from day to day, and an idea of what the weather is going to do assists our planning and preparation for the hours ahead. It’s not like that in every part of the world of course. In some countries every day’s weather is the same, in others the seasons come and go but they are very predictable. Wherever we are in the world the land, if it is to be productive, needs rain. And who organises and sends the rain? God does. And because the clouds need to dispose of some of their weight to enable them to be lifted over mountain ranges, it’s on the mountains that the rain falls first and falls the most. That is why the western side of England is wetter than the east, the clouds dump their rain on Manchester so that they can make it across the Pennines!

The psalmist here is keen to point out that the Lord waters the mountains from His upper chambers, in other words He sources the outflow from the waters that are above the earth. The rains fall upon the mountain slopes and water cascades down, gathering momentum, and very soon the little mountain streams turn into rivers that flow through the valleys and across the plains where fertile land is watered and crops grow. It’s a brilliant system, incredibly complex and masterminded by a genius. Should He not get the credit for thinking of it all and having the engineering skills to make it happen? Hallelujah!
