Psalm 104:1

Psalm 104:1

What a great God

Psalm 103 was David’s revelation of the glorious nature and character of our God, and now the anonymous writer of Psalm 104 takes us on a journey of discovery, helping us to see how that character and nature are reflected in all that God has made. This is definitely not a Psalm for the evolutionists!

If we contrast what we are about to read with Genesis chapter 1, we will see that there is a parallel order to things but the writer here is intent on showing us how Creation is a revelation of God’s glory and His control over all the earth. We will see how God reveals His glory in the heavens, in the earth’s foundation, in the oceans and seas, in the animal and bird life, in the plants, through the seasons, in the sun and moon and in human beings. It is a wonderful tribute to our Maker and reluctant as I am to leave Psalm 103 behind, I can’t wait to uncover the riches of the verses that lie before us. As I write I’m looking at the calendar, today is November 20th 2023 and there are 35 verses to enjoy, by my reckoning I will complete this feast of delights at Christmas! Hallelujah!

V1        Psalm 96:6 introduced us to the coupling of “splendour and majesty”. Like so many of the other pairings of God’s attributes there is a sheen of glory and perfection that shimmers us the psalmists draw near. They see His love and faithfulness, His righteousness and justice, His strength and glory, it’s as if no one adjective is sufficient to describe the One they are trying to portray. Of course not!

Once again, the invitation to praise is directed to the writer’s soul, this Psalm is going to unfold as a personal review of all that God has done, it’s you and me reminding our souls of His glorious, creative works, and if our souls are troubled, downcast or fearful then they need to be reminded of who is in charge! It’s not me and it’s not you, it is God. Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves of this and let the word get out, especially to the inner being that resides in each of us, “Listen soul, the Lord my God is very great, and you need to remember that His splendour and majesty is all around us. Let’s take a few minutes to stop and stare and be reminded of who is really in control of it all. Then we will no longer be dismayed or anxious.”
