Psalm 98:1a

Psalm 98:1a

Sing to the Lord

I wonder if we will be singing many of these Psalm when the Lord reigns in righteousness over the world. The Bible suggests that Yeshua will one day return to the earth and establish a millennial kingdom. The Satan will be bound and all nations will bow the knee to the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Psalm 93,95 and 96 all have similar themes where different parts of the universe demonstrate the power and authority of our God and give praise to Him. In this Psalm the order of worshippers is: -

·      The faithful Israelites who assemble at the Temple v1-3

·      All the peoples of the earth v4-6

·      The whole of creation v7-9

V1a      What are we doing when we sing songs to the Lord? 10 things – at least!

1.     We are proclaiming that He alone is God.

2.     We are expressing our belief in Him.

3.     We are putting Him in His rightful place in our affections.

4.     We are humbling ourselves and exalting Him.

5.     We are singing because we know that He hears and that He takes pleasure from our songs.

6.     We are declaring to all of creation that He is God. We join with them!

7.     We are raising His music above all religions and other forms of worship in the world.

8.     We are telling the Satan who it is that reigns as our God, our songs rise through the heavens.

9.     We are responding to the love that burns in our hearts.

10.  We are acknowledging the prompting of His Holy Spirit.

It wasn’t until the 1600s that the Roman Catholic church decided that worship should be of such a nature that members of the congregation could participate. Along came Bach, Handel, Haydn and Mozart. Charles Wesley was one of the first prominent Protestants to write music for congregations to sing, he penned over 2,000 hymns. We were still singing his hymns in my childhood, and some remain to this day. What a transformation, for we now live at a time when we could go online and learn a new song every day! Is this a preparation for the coming of our King?
