Psalm 90:14

Psalm 90:14

Unfailing love

For Moses, there had been a long night of God’s anger and wrath. The darkness of the night had been a time of oppressive deliberation when death had beckoned, and the pointlessness of life had overwhelmed him. In this time Moses had seen the futility of his days and realised that little that he had accomplished counted for anything, it was all over in a flash and accompanied by trouble and sorrow. I wonder if Moses could ever have guessed how significant his time really was and that he would be held up as a great man of God thousands of years later?

And now, as morning breaks, he cries out with a renewed sense of purpose; instead of wrath and anger he can plead that the Lord’s unfailing love will satisfy him. Have we had nights like this, when we are overwhelmed with despair and dread but, when morning breaks, life seems to have a renewed purpose and the light of God’s love eclipses His anger? Why, there’s even a possibility that we might sing a song of joy. Indeed, such is the sense of relief and renewal that we contemplate that we will be glad for the rest of our days!

I am reminded of the suffering and anguish of the Lord Jesus who faced wave after wave of the awful wrath of God throughout His crucifixion, and then it grew in intensity as He entered into death and was encompassed by the darkness of the grave. For Jesus too came the dawning of a new day and the sunlight of His Father’s love freed His Spirit and His body to emerge from the tomb and sing for joy. We will never be able to imagine the love and gladness that flooded His being on that resurrection morning except that, one day, the morning sun will shine for us and we will find ourselves in the presence of our Lord and King. Like Moses, we will be glad as His joy floods our souls and we realise that divine love has swept away the darkness of the night!
