Psalm 90:10b

Psalm 90:10b

Come fly to me

We would have to agree with Moses that one thing has not changed since his Psalm was written, even the best years of our lives are tempered by trouble and sorrow. Rarely is there a month that goes by without problems caused by financial, health, work, family, relationship, national and international or spiritual problems that cause stress or anguish. And yes, we can also agree that life absolutely flies by and before we know it, the 70th year has arrived!

The last phrase of this verse is unusual, we are used to the idea of our bodies returning to the dust, but I do not recall any other verse that describes us “flying away.” In fact, it was beyond the understanding of men like Moses to imagine men taking flight, they all believed that they would go down to the dust. It could be that the words here just mean that we disappear. Some scholars interpret the term to refer to the death rattle! However, and this is just my theory, we read in Deuteronomy 34 that, “Moses died in the land of Moab and the Lord buried him in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.” God took the spirit of Moses and he flew away, it was just his body that was buried by the Lord. A similar experience happened to Elijah who was carried up to heaven by a whirlwind. It may be that, here in Psalm 90, Moses is being prophetic about his own death!

The reference to this great man being buried by the Lord is curious, to say the least! I suspect that Moses had attendants or men like Joshua with him as he ascended Mount Nebo and viewed the land that the Lord was giving to the Israelites. Maybe he had now descended Nebo and was journeying back to the camp when he was taken. I suspect that those who were with him were instructed by the Lord as to how and where to bury his body and they were then sworn to keep this secret. Beth Peor was north-west of Nebo, heading away from the northern end of the Dead Sea. It is in modern Jordan and is a site that is disputed today, so Moses has retained his anonymity! Notice that he was still a fit and able man when God took him, his job was done, and his time had ended.

Let’s keep on doing the tasks for which the Lord has equipped us until He says, “It’s time. Well done good and faithful servant. Come, fly away to me!”
