Psalm 89:13

Psalm 89:13

The hands of God

Sometimes it helps us to envision God in human form, after all, He did appear in this way to a number of Old Testament characters and it is natural for all followers of Yeshua to imagine Him as a man like us. I think, that just browsing this Psalm alone, we have to admit that this God of ours is way, way, way beyond human characteristics and that His strength and power are phenomenal and incalculable. Remember, He only needed to speak to create light, to bring the earth into being and to put the sun, moon and stars into their places. So, yes, His arm is endowed with great power, and none can defy Him and get away with it, especially the Satan.

The Psalm seems to make a distinction between God’s left and right hands; the left is strong, His right hand is exalted. What does this mean? This Hebrew idiom for the right hand has two meanings:-

·      In one it symbolizes power and strength. “Your right hand, Lord, has become glorious in power; Your right hand Lord, has dashed the enemy in pieces.” Exodus 15:6.

·      In the other it represents salvation. “Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed. He will hear from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand.” Psalm 20:7.

In contrast, the left hand was said to represent calamity and judgement. In other words, God’s hands are expressive of His actions and their effects on us mortals on earth. Notice also that when God hears, He acts. When God speaks, He acts. When God sees, He acts. God’s arm and His hands are His thoughts in action. He is indeed a God of great power and authority, we should never underestimate Him!
