Psalm 69:19

Psalm 69:19

Because of my foes

Scorn, disgrace, shame, reproach, dishonour; these are horrible terms and there is no doubting their meaning. Yeshua was the object of the very worst kinds of disgrace, indignity and humiliation at the hands of men. He who was perfect and sinless, who only lived to love and help the human race, had been trampled underfoot and made the object of mankind’s worst abuses. Of course, the Father knew this. Of course, He could see what was happening to His beloved One. Of course, He could come and rescue Him, but He would not. He turned away and let the suffering continue because He had no other plan that could save us. God the Father allowed His beloved Son to endure all of this because He also passionately loves you and me, and there was no other way to free us from the curse of sin. Do not, for one moment, underestimate the cost to Almighty God Himself, as He witnessed what was being done to His Son, the extension of His own character and heart. Do not ever harbour the thought that God does not love you or would not do anything to save you!

This verse goes on to acknowledge the enemies that were visible before God at this moment. The enemy mob was composed not just of the Priests, the Roman soldiers, the officials, the Jewish King and his family, and all the baying crowd, there were other enemies, unseen but far more sinister and filled with even greater malicious intent. Satan and his hordes had been subject to the dismissive authority of Yeshua on countless occasions, some had even been discharged into the Sea of Galilee in a herd of pigs! Now, it was payback time, and how they enjoyed the abusive treatment of the Messiah. The human participants in this outrage were mostly unaware of who they were crucifying, Jesus had cried, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” But Satan knew and he was convinced that, at long last, he had the upper hand in the conflict. From heaven, the Lord God looked down and He could see them all and only He could possibly know the outcome of the tragic scene that unfolded on Golgotha’s hill. Hallelujah!
