Psalm 68:29

Psalm 68:29

Kings will bring You gifts

It’s hard for us to imagine the true import of what is described in this Psalm. All of the foreign nations and cultures of David’s day had their gods, their idols and their pagan religions. With their belief structures went the “high places”, the temples, the rituals and the worship. El, Molech, Baal, Mot, Asherah – all of these so-called deities, and their subordinates, were written into the cultures of the people. If a foreign dignitary or royal family member visited, it was their duty to pay their respects to the god(s) of the host nation. Gifts were brought, the more powerful the visitor, the more expensive and extravagant their offerings.

David had no shadow of a doubt that Yahweh was the supreme deity, that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob exceeded all of the lesser beings who were merely spirits acting under the authority of Lucifer. Now that Jerusalem was established as the capital city of Israel and Mount Zion was designated as the Holy Mountain, and now that the sacred tent was erected and furnished with the Ark of the Covenant, the nation was complete and its status far exceeded that of the Canaanites and all other surrounding states. Jerusalem now housed the earthly royal palace of the God of gods and the King of kings and all must bring tribute to Him. 2 Samuel 8 describes the mindset of the time, and the lavish gifts of the surrounding, conquered peoples, which David dedicated to the Lord.

Oh, how we have fallen. The Christian faith of this country was once a beacon to the nations and our God was recognised, if not worshipped, by foreign visitors. That does not mean that all is lost. Those of us who recognise His sovereign power and authority will continue to give Him and His name, pride of place over all other deities, even the gods of materialism and knowledge. It is pride, and man’s greed and self-reliance, that has undermined their need for God, the enemy is well-practiced at deceit and propaganda, but our Lord will prevail. Welcome the day when every knee will bow and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord! then they will bring their gifts to Him. Hallelujah!
