Praying in His Will

In our “House of Prayer” ministry we often remind ourselves that when we pray for the nations, for national or world events, even for our families and friends, our prayer requests could so easily be way outside of the Will of God. We pray for peace and harmony and righteousness, for good to triumph over evil, for problems to go away. Long term, of course, that is the Divine Plan and it will happen, be sure of that. However, God uses many means to achieve His Will. David could not see any sense or purpose on his being on the run from Saul or from the Philistines however, a Plan was unfolding and later in life he might have reflected that even in this precarious state, he was perfectly safe and part of something much bigger than his temporary well-being.

So, do we pray for Covid to go away or is this part of the judgement of God upon the nations?

Do we pray for the evil rulers of a country to be overthrown or does God intend to use them for a greater purpose?

How do we pray for Israel, surrounded by innumerable plots and schemes, devised by those who would throw them into the sea? Isn’t that exactly what will start to happen one day in the future and ultimately lead to the return of Christ? 

Do we pray for a godless Government Policy to fail or is this the direct consequence of our moral bankruptcy? In other words, do we bring God’s judgement upon ourselves?

Do we pray for trouble to be lifted from a friend or family member when God may have to use desperate means to bring them to their knees?

David does not pray for immediate peace, he asks, here in this verse before us, “In Your anger, God, bring the nations down.” In other words, cut the nations down to size in their arrogance, pride and self-sufficiency. Show them that they do not own this world, nor can they rule over it. Show them their vulnerability and how dependent upon You they are. Stop them from gloating over their enemies and believing themselves to be invincible with their weapons of mass destruction. Don’t bring peace and prosperity Lord, bring the nations down! 

Oh, how I hate this world’s arrogance and how I love Him who is Lord of all. May His Will be done. Sometimes that is the only prayer we can pray.

Psalm1:5       Our earthly journey will allow us, at times, to stand with the redeemed in holy awe and worship exhilarated by the presence of our Father.  In the Psalmists’ day these “assemblies of the righteous” would have been joyful times of worship at God’s sanctuary where music played, choirs sang and the people joined in the excitement and corporate wonder of being together in God’s presence. Psalm 119:83 Wineskins in the smoke Well, this verse has caught us by surprise! What does it mean? As we will be aware, in ancient times, wine was not stored in purpose-made glass bottles but in animal skins. In order to keep the skin pliable and soft it must not be allowed to dry out for it would soon shrivel and crack. It follows that the last thing you would do with your treasured wineskins is to hang them up over a smoky fire, not only would they quickly wither but the smoke would clearly ruin the flavour and texture of the wine!  What does the author mean when he says that he is like such a wineskin?  It denotes the uncomfortable condition he was in or at least thought himself to be in; being caught in the midst of smoke is very uncomfortable, and he considered himself to be in darkness with sin and afflictions, like a wineskin in smoke, black and sooty.
