Psalm 48:3

Psalm 48:3

God is our fortress

Over the centuries, mankind has built countless castles, fortresses, battlements and citadels. There is this earthly desire to defend ourselves by building strong walls and impregnable barriers against our enemies. This goes on to our day, I even have to “build a wall” around my computer to keep unwanted influences out. This Psalm asks us to put our trust for our defence in the Lord God, it is reminding us that if He is “at home” then no enemy can touch us and no outside influence can infiltrate.

When besieged Israelites made their way to Jerusalem there was comfort in knowing that they entered the City of God. If He dwelt in the Holy Place, who could harm them? Zechariah 2 speaks of a coming day when Jerusalem will be a city without walls “And I myself will be a wall of fire around it, declares the Lord” v5.

We who are called by Him, are described in the Scriptures, as God’s Holy Temple, His dwelling place, so may we not also depend on His protection and care? “If God is for us, who can be against us?” writes Paul in Romans 8:31. Take that thought with you, there is protection, there is a wall. If you dwell near the heart of the living God and walk in His ways, you will be safe from your enemies. Hallelujah! It is not walls and battlements that keep us safe. It is not laws and rules and commandments. It is not It is not a gun in a bedside drawer and a good pair of fists in a crowd. Human beings are fearful, self-protective and by nature we build walls around ourselves and our families. Let’s be comforted by the thought today that the Lord God has built His wall around us. When He is present, the enemy cannot overcome us.
