Psalm 47:9

Psalm 47:9

He is greatly exalted

There is obviously a major prophetic twist to this final verse of Psalm 47. The song writer anticipates a day when all of the nobles, rulers, royalty and authorities of the world’s countries will be gathered before the Lord God. I think that the verse suggests that they will assemble before the Lord God in the same way as the people of the God of Abraham. This is no more than the Lord had promised Abraham when He said, “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:3. God also promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations (Genesis 17:4-6) and that through his offspring all nations on earth will be blessed. (Genesis 22;17-18.) In other words, because of their special status on the earth, and because they were the only ones who worshipped the true God, then the Jews are the spiritual fathers of all the nations. We need to realise that we would not have Christ if He had not come to Israel, as a Jew, fulfilling the prophecies and showing us that the faith of the Gentiles, rests on the Lord’s promises to His ancient people. For their God is our God and He has not changed, our Christian faith is founded on the Hebrew Scriptures and we owe a great debt to the nation who rejected him!!

The Psalm ends with a bit of an enigma because the word for “kings” in our English Bibles is literally “shields.” Again, I wonder if this is referring to Israel, that by receiving the Law and the Covenants they effectively have shielded and protected the truth about the Lord God, for the rest of the world. Without them, there would be no moral or spiritual shields for the kings of the nations. All that is righteous and true still has its roots in the Commandments of God, there has never been any other defence against the Satan. The Lord is greatly exalted. Hallelujah!

We take up our song of praise Lord and clap our hands, shouting to You with cries of joy. You are the Most High and the Great King. Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you – majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? You love Your people, and You desire to bring us home. Your sovereign reign over the earth is about to commence and we will be there to sing and exalt You with words of adoration and devotion to the One who is the Lord God and to His Son, Jesus Christ. You are the King of all the earth. Hallelujah!

“He who sits on the throne of heaven will shelter His people with His presence. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” For their God is our God and He has not changed, our faith is founded on the Hebrew Scriptures and we owe a great debt to Israel who He chose but who rejected him. Oh Lord, Your truth is our shield and defence. You are greatly exalted.
